In Berger’s Novel he discussed 911 and the social impact of media images. Unlike many other historical events, none of them were captured on live television for the world to see. On that horrific day America got to witness first hand the series of tragic events that took place starting with the planes crashing into the twin towers, then people jumping to their deaths, ending with the twin towers collapsing. Because this was televised, Berger states, changed America in profound ways. I guess in some ways it did because witnessing something first hand really hits close to home, where as if there was no television and we were just reading about it we could only imagine. I believe the news played a huge role in the series of events that took place after the attacks, such as the hate crimes. The terrorist pictures were the same nationality of those killed and they looked some what identical. Would these people have gone out and killed these people if they didn’t have a picture to look for? I think Americans felt threatened and went out to defend themselves because of what was being said on the news. Media portrayed Muslims as dangerous threat, and the society wanted to demolish them.
